Over the past few years, rumors have circulated in Japan about the existence of gigantic humanoid life-forms inhabiting the icy waters of the Antarctic.
Hello, Ningen
Reportedly observed on multiple occasions by crew members of government-operated "whale research" ships, these so-called "Ningen" (lit. "humans") are said to be completely white in color with an estimated length of 20 to 30 meters. Eyewitnesses describe them as having a human-like shape, often with legs, arms, and even five-fingered hands. Sometimes they are described as having fins or a large mermaid-like tail instead of legs. The only visible facial features are the eyes and mouth.
Artist's rendition of a Ningen standing upright
According to one account, crew members on deck observed what they initially thought was a foreign submarine in the distance. When they approached, however, it became clear from the irregular shape of the thing that it was not man-made -- it was alive. The creature quickly disappeared under water.
Ningen?
For the most part, the existence of the Ningen is considered an urban legend. Much of the information about this rumored creature can be traced back to a series of posts on the 2channel forums, written by a person describing the experience of a friend employed on a government "whale research" vessel. (Read the full Japanese text of the original story that first appeared on a 2channel forum.)
Ningen?
The popular thread attracted the attention of many readers from outside the 2channel community, and the November 2007 issue of MU magazine, a Japanese publication devoted to the study of paranormal phenomena, featured an article about the Antarctic humanoids.
The article speculated on the possibility of unidentified creatures inhabiting the southern seas, and it included a Google Maps screenshot showing what looks like a Ningen in the South Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Namibia.
To date, no solid evidence has been presented to confirm the existence of the Ningen. The government is believed to have kept detailed records of the sightings, but they have released no information to the public and have reportedly instructed eyewitnesses to remain silent.
Two videos claiming to show Ningen under water have been posted on YouTube.

Ningen sightings seem to occur most frequently at night, making them all the more difficult to photograph. In still images, the sea cryptids mostly just look like icebergs, though it is said that their smooth, human-like skin can be seen when the photographs are enlarged.

In any case, no convincing photographs have been made public, either because they do not exist or because, as some argue, the government does not want to invite undue scrutiny and tarnish the scientific reputation of the whale research program.

Very interesting! I love reading about unexplained stuff so it'll be great to hear about Japan's theories etc. Can't wait for the next one!

The third one is most likely modeled after the Didarabocchi from Mononoke-hime. But the videos are scarily real. ^^
[ ]BTW, if you're gonna do an urban legend series... I'll seriously stop my browser from loading when Kuchisake-onna shows up. Freaks me out everytime, even with being a longtime horror movie fanatic.

I'm using the Slit-Mouth Woman in a fantasy film I am writing in which a demon is the antagonist (who I intend to be the voice actor for). She will be a manifestation used as a minion.

Vivi, you're lucky that Kuchisake-onna isn't your own mother. There was a nice manga about that: Kuchisake-onna densetsu by INUKI Kanako.
Confront your fear. *_*

Now I understand some of the inspiration between the angels of Evangelion and the importance of the south pole in the series :)
[ ]Jay
Oh man, that's exactly what I thought when I saw this! Even the south pole thing too!
[ ]I know about a lot of cryptids, but this is the first time I've ever heard about Ningen. I think the idea of cryptids posssibly inhabiting Antarctica/the surrounding waters is perfectly viable, which is why this intrigues me so much.
2012 Second Impact?
hahaha just kidding, I don't believe in 2012 ;)

@lv I was coming here to say the same thing! That's totally an angel!

"or because, as some argue, the government does not want to invite undue scrutiny and tarnish the scientific reputation of the whale research program."
I spat my coffee out with laughter. The Japanese "Scientific Whaling Program" is a complete and utter joke. In over 20 years they have yet to publish a single peer-reviewed paper in any major Scientific Journal, because their "Research" is carried out by factory vessels, which process the whale meat for sale once they have been slaughtered.
Methinks this story is a bunch of bulls**t cooked up by a Japanese PR firm to divert its own people's attention from the fact that Japan is breaking International Law in International and Australian waters under the thinly veilled guise of "scientific research".
Read the news today - they rammed and destroyed a protest vessel, callously ignoring the seamen's "Mayday" calls for over 10 minutes.
This is sick, vile, and an utter load of crap.

i know u have your own opinion but dont be so quick to jump to conclusions, we naturally dont believe in wat we've never seen before. i'm not really sure if this is real but u can never be too sure

Agreeing with above saying it looks like an Angel from Evangelion. In fact, the artist rendition looks specifically like Lilith and above that, 2 above the videos, looks like Adam's back. And it only makes the argument that Evangelion is real since Japan's "Scientific Whaling Program" could just be code for Gehern/NERV or SEELE. Well, we'll see if Anno was right about the end of the world and was just wrong about the dates.

[ ]Earthshkr
Hey ya know, this planet has been around almost 5 billion years. That being said, time itself, given enough time, can make the impossible possible and the improbable almost certain. No one knows really how our genetics have adapted to environmental pressures.
[ ]Take for instance how so many things have wings or legs or eyes. These things although common do not necessarily mean they come from a common origin. Like a penguin and a seal. A penguin has flippers but is a bird while the seal has flippers but is a mammel.
My entire point of this is that our genius almighty creator didnt have to use a set pattern for things so how do we know what wierdness, what delightfull exciting and inspiring wierdness exists in this world. I think folklore need be more commonspect than dismissed. Are there monsters? You tell me. Isnt a squid the wierdest thing you ever saw?
Toxic & Requiem
First off, Earth is said to be over 8 billion years old, not "almost 5 billion"...That's a real difference...And leave religion out of this. If God was real, he'd be the most sadistic maniac of all. Or have you forgotten the whole plagues during Moses' time and other such "events".
A penguin's wings are wings that were adapted for use in water. A seal's flippers are entirely different. And obviously there is a vast number of creatures still hidden in the deeper crags and recesses of this planet. Creatures that dug down into the Earth and have been there since...Others know this, people have dug down into the Earth. Often enough, there were "accidents" where they had to block off these places. And there never has been a big project by anyone to dig into the Earth, as deep as possible, because everyone knows it's a bad idea...anything could happen. Any manner of creature could be living under...
[ ]Daethos
Your wrong. The earth has been around for 4.5-4.8 billion years. Not 8 billion.
[ ]That one guy
Could just ask the Earth how old she is, but I'm sure she'd say she's a billion or so years younger. :p
Anyway, Earth's age is nearly irrelevant in this, and however old we think it is, we can just as easily have miscalculated it; people have made mistakes before. Example being that the universe revolves around Earth.
The Girl
The earth is estimated to be 4.6 billion years old so yeah, almost 5 billion years old. No where near 8 billion years old.

The Japanese should consume fewer whale meat and hentais. Seems to affect the state of mind... in a negative way...
[ ]Anonnotweeaboo
There are some logical explanation about this,
My Version:
I think it's the tortured souls of every whales the japanese have killed, the souls are gathering in the ocean and currently discussing about what kind of form they should take when they're going to attack tokyo later, then one of the dead whale who watched his meat got eaten by some evangelion fan in japan suggest they should use something scary, gigantic, but familiar to the japanese.
4chan Version:
It's the combination of drinking too much sake and fapping to too much hentai, probably some very bad guro monster hentai.
Conspiracy Theory Version:
The Greenpeace shot them with hallucinogenic chemical during their last whale killing session. To see if their experiment in creating mind control drugs have succeeded or not. They intent to use it on the USA so everyone will become hippies and protect the nature.
A more realistic and make sense version:
It's a chunk of ice or a polar bear who got stranded in pacific ocean or a white megalodon or a white whale or perhaps it's an evolved whale due to the stress the japanese put on them for years.
Lol, why do strange things mostly came from japan?
What happened to that nation?
I guess it's because they've been taking too much hentai :D
[ ]Matt
Whoa, what? Lost polar bear? A polar bear got lost and travelled to the opposite pole?
[ ]Korovjov
"Lol, why do strange things mostly came from japan?

[ ]Anonnotweeaboo

[ ]I was just kidding :D
and yes... japan is really full of strange things, I got relatives who worked there, and they always tell me strange tales about japan everytime they go back from japan. Maybe because of the atomic radiation? who knows?

seems to me to be a frozen bow wake from a large ship. how mysterious.
[ ]bzzt
this is cool but it also seems like viral marketing for the Evangelion movie that WETA is working on. then again, maybe that is just my read on it but if the movie is going to be popular in the US for people who have no idea about the series then it makes sense to do this a la "cloverfield"...people will totally go for it.
if this *is* connected to the Eva movie, then i hope they don't change the story too much and try to dumb it all down...

Way to go retards, does no one else see this as a "Bigfoot of the South Pole"? There is NO proof here whatsoever that these creatures exist. I'll believe it when one is actually caught, photographed, or filmed, as several of these are labeled artists renditions or they claim to be real when they have obviously been fabricated.

wow even tho their is no real evidence of this creature...i believe its true...and i can prove it! in the bible it states how we will see things that are not ever be for seen...and how the government will keep this information away from us...(why keep it away?) because we would all go crazy. and most people cant handle the truth...plus they don't want to present the matter to us and not have answers to our questions...
[ ]Nick
Where the hell does the bible say that? Chapter and verse, honey.
[ ]Badger
The "bible" is nothing but vile propaganda and full of lies. Using it as "evidence" for something is utterly laughable. Same with all other so called "holy books".
[ ]Artremn
I laugh at your utter ignorance of other beliefs. You also neglect to provide evidence that the religions/supernatural phenomena do not exist.
[ ]Ball's in your court you shuttered weasel.
Cheshire
That's called "proving a negative" and it's something stupid people ask of people with an ounce of logic. Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence, not clamping your hands onto your ears and shouting "nuh-uh!" I see these sites on Stumble every so often, and I'm always dismayed at the abhorrent lack of critical thinking and skepticism among people who are searching for frickin' mermaids. I know your fantasies are grand and you desperately want them to be true, but the universe doesn't care what you want. It's only concerned with what IS. And what is, is that none of this crap exists unless you have hard evidence. Hard. Solid. Tangible. Not pie-eyed dreams and haughty dismissal at the notion that it may just happen to be a load.
[ ]David
keep your hate for religeon to yourself, you would'nt like it if I came up with hate comments against your beliefs would you?

Will you people get your panties out of a bunch?! it's his/her opinion and everyone is entitled to one. on the other hand he/she should have taken into consideration about others. now kiss and make up.

Silly that you are trying to use the Bible as a source when you cannot even use correct capitalization. The Bible is a title of a book so it should be capitalized.
[ ]Alice
The oceans are so intriguing yet creepy. For some reason it reminds me of Pokemon haha
[ ]Mary
yeah its creepy and when i first saw,it just like you,Pokemon suddenly appears on my mind >.<
[ ]Nick
I had to laugh at "tarnish the scientific reputation of the whale research program."
Outside japan, the whale "research" program is widely known for the whaling front that it is - it has no scientific output, and no reputation to tarnish. In fact, if the japanese whaling fleet were to release evidence and documentation of a newly described species, it might just prove itself to be worth more than a flotilla of abattoirs.
[ ]psi commando
greetings comrades. this is a very interesting thread. evangelion indeed. perhaps these beings exist and perhaps not. deep ones? i hope not. aliens? perhaps. why dont you be a good sport and indulge us a little more, comrade. perhaps share with us an article that is not written in kanji or katakanna, for those of us who cant read japenese? -the mind is quicker than the eye-

[ ]Jillian
that last picture was clearly someone in a suit. i dnt believe there is a creature out there like this. some of those pictures could be another sea creature
[ ]Kayla
It SAYS "Artist's rendition!" Why does no one on this site understand what that means??
[ ]Antreah
I find this interesting but people... please read how the pictures are labeled !!!
"Artists Rendering" does not mean this is a photograph of the creature... It simply means I heard a story and made a neat fake picture !
I believe there is probably something out there that the Japanese fishermen are seeing...
[ ]but running fake photos and claiming them to be "The Creature" is irresponsible and will discredit an otherwise well thought out site. Definitely a story to keep watching !
-Jay-
I just want to say that first one is just a beauty, Stay Puff Marshmallow whaleman! Hope they stay away and remain free and happy.
[ ]Badger1911
The videos are typical for such "sightings". Low quality, horrible lighting.
As for the sightings themselves, it's stated that they usually happen at night. Night at sea can be a pain in the ass. Depending on cloud cover, moon light and waves it can be literally pitch black all around. What has been seen can be anything. Most likely some kind of animals, whales maybe, maybe some floating debris and other stuff.
Reason people. Reason.
[ ]Chris
Or...."the (Japanese) government does not want to invite undue scrutiny and tarnish the scientific reputation of the whale research program." LOL!! The Japanese "whale research program" has no scientific reputation to tarnish.
It is a whale extermination programme and if any 'ningen (in the unlikely case that they exist) get caught, that marine species will end up as mere Sushi for the whale-eating population of Japan. Only in Japan is hunting marine species into near extinction, regarded as 'Scientific'. To the rest of mankind their rape of marine fauna species is regarded as shameful .

I think it looks like an albino genetic mutation. I suspect Octupus (who reside in the area and grow extremely large) and great Whale. The appearance of arms/legs could be due to large muscular tentacle. This could be a result of fallout from Hiroshima in the 40's, or an unknown Nuclear fallout on Japan's part (those are usually covered up if they are "containable" like Chernobyl in Russia).

Oh, and if you've ever studied the Mayan prophecies, which are the largest of the world ending prophecies for 2012, they clearly left out the leap year necessities of their calendar. The Mayan Calendar only equates for 365 days per year, not the 365.25 days per year we actually need to travel around the sun. The Mayan Prophecy, the largest and most well known world ending prophecy (the one that all the other prophecies are based on) has already passed. Another Y2K, I'm so sorry.

Hey guys, when I was a kid, me and my parents, family friends we went to Zallaq beach, Bahrain. It was getting dark, and i just gazed upon the waters and i saw something just like this. it was pale white and moving slowly. my mom thought it was a plastic bag, but we zoomed it in the cam and no, it was something like a human head, with shoulders. it was so pale and kept moving. After that, we never went there again. too bad i live in a religious household, where they think images of monsters, which are just colors grouped together on a 2dim slide, can invite "DEMONIC SPIRITS". Its sad they threw that tape. It was sometime between 2001-2003, i can't remember the year. it happened during the summer. It wouldn't be a dead body, because dead bodies don't float with the head over the water like that. It wouldn't be some living person, because it was night and no one swims at night at a place like that. The moon was full too. It's like all these things just gathered up and then we have this strange thing moving around.

Perhaps it is there to try and protect the whales from the "research ships." Which of course are not research at all but for murdering the gentle creatures of the seas for even more food for humans. Actually it is time for all humans to evolve. Other beings on this planet think and feel as we do, humans are only a parasite. It is time we were not parasites any longer. Watch Earthlings the movie.
It has been said an alien ship was at the bottom of the oceans at one time. Look at what octopuses heads resemble. They also have great intellect. Should these Ningen exist, I would hope it is to help protect the other species on this Earth from us. Again, we must evolve, we are better than what we perpetrate upon this planet. Go vegan, utilize the wind and sun power. Stop the radiation from leaking into the oceans from Japan.

O.O. It's 4 AM, I woke up early because I kept having trouble sleeping and staying asleep. Out of sheer boredom, I decided to google sea creatures of Antarctica. Well, that woke me up for sure and have to catch the bus at 6 AM. This is...very freaky. A lot of people might either believe this or the die-hard skeptics would debunk this in 3 or less minutes flat. I am mixed. Or maybe neutral if that counts. People like to make up stories of " sightings " of a "creature/monster" . It's like a fad as trashy fashions change every season and as the UFO sightings craze back in the 20th century. A lot of those so called, " Creatures/monsters " turn out to be a hoax. But, taking in consideration that the Antarctic ocean has not been fully explored, the Ningen might actually be legit. This planet has been around for billions of years. I looked at textbooks of sea creatures way before the Dino's settled and they looked freaky as hell. Because no one really bothered to explore the fathom deeps of the Antarctic ocean and nature evolves freaky sea animals because they are isolated and in a way, stuck in time. For all we know, the Ningen could be a result of a kind of birth defect or something caused by man-made pollution problems. As to why the Japanese government is trying to hush it up, the most reasonable explanation would be to spare them the embarrassment of being called out on the " whale research " which is a load of bullshit. Think about it. Not a damn single legit paper on whale research or good solid proof they are really doing anything. Ningen comes along. International Whale people find out and think to themselves, " Ok they haven't produced a damn paper or evidence so what's this? This is their research? This is fake. Something strange is going on here. What are they doing in reality? Let's go find out, shall we? " . You see the possible scenario here? That's my take on it. To those who think the fisherman was pulling everyone's leg for laughs, he wouldn't really have benefited from that because he would have been outed as a hoax by now if he was indeed trolling.

has anybody actually checked the google map thingy... the link has no creature....and is not in japan but guess what....africa...yeah..and i also checked the map number and all and well...nothing. so if anyone has something about this email me: obyboy95@hotmail.com.... i'd really like it if the nigen was actually but i seriously doubt it... haven't read all the comments yet... i'm on it

please no more evangelion god stuff nor aliens...just please....and stop blaming aliens or demos for earth destraction...as you can see you manage on our own just fine... by the way if the nigen exists(wich it does not) it would probably be the outcome of somekind of mutation which you seriously consider first when it comes to japan...freaky creatures an all......no evidence no simmilarity in photos.....secret and all...propably there no whale reaserch anyway.... people used to see many weird things at the dragon triangle so it's not something new...and the google map has no actually nigen...the numbers gave me africa and mexico...and in japan nothing but waves... prove me wrong. (with actuall evidence) and i'll be happy. i wanted the nigen to be real but it's not

i beg of you.. no more bible/aliens stuff...just please... if a monster ever occurs it's propably because of genetical mutations not aliens, gods or demons/angels...especially in japan.

(This article is really old. Goodness. I'm not sure if my comment will be accepted.)
I was watching a Japanese video earlier and a marine biologist in the video brought up one of these photographs. He noted that the existence of these creatures may be remotely plausible as a result of genetic mutation occurring 50 million years ago and mentioned that it probably originated near Pakistan, but he didn't explicitly say he believed it was real.
For the record: From what I understand, these actually aren't called "ningen" (人間). The biologist addressed them as "humanoid" (人型 (hitogata), literally meaning "human shape"; when referring to these creatures in specific, it's usually written in Katakana (ヒトガタ) rather than Kanji).
