Researchers at Japan's Jikei University will soon be checking the mailbox for a cool package from Siberia -- the recently discovered frozen body of an ancient baby mammoth. The nearly complete body of the female calf, said to be one of the best-preserved specimens of frozen mammoth ever discovered, is estimated to have been less than one year old before it was preserved in ice about 10,000 years ago.
According to the Russian Tass news agency, a reindeer herder stumbled upon the 130 cm (4 ft 3 in) tall, 50 kg (110 lbs) frozen mammoth in May in an area of permafrost in northwestern Siberia, near the Yuribey River on the Yamal Peninsula, which extends into the Kara Sea. The mammoth, whose trunk and eyes remain intact and which still has some fur on its body, was shown to an international panel of experts that convened on July 5 in the town of Salekhard, near the discovery site.
Preparations are now being made to ship the baby mammoth to Jikei University School of Medicine, where researchers will use advanced computed tomography (CT) scanners to obtain three-dimensional images of its internal organs. "This is the first opportunity for anyone to perform an analysis on a complete mammoth body," says Jikei University professor Naoki Suzuki, "and it should provide a more complete picture of its anatomy and how it lived."

that is soooo sad looking!
[ ]mely mel
this is such a horrible looking thing...i cant believe people actually froze a baby elephant!! that poor poor thing..that ain right we shouldnt be allowed to do this.
[ ]Kitty
We didn't freeze it the ice age did it's millions of years old and it's a mammoth not an elephant though they are closely related
[ ]:)
dumb person this is a mommoth!!
[ ]Ole-Martin
UUUUUH..... For 10.000 years ago, we didn't have the EQUIPMENT to freeze a fucking MAMMOTH BABY. da veit du dæ hore.
[ ]Boris
Froze an elephant? Did you even read the article? It's a Mammoth!!! No one froze it, it froze itself!!!! Figuratively speaking. Anyway, very interesting.
[ ]tudiebug
it is an elephant not a mammoth don't you think a baby mammoth would be bigger than the normal baby elephant since the mammoth was suppose to be this huge creature?
[ ]Fishgirl
wow. this is so amazing. But i dun think it is a baby mammoth. it looks kinda small. I think it should be bigger
[ ]Annabelle
So how exactly does an animal get preserved in ice with such little decay? It appears that the animal was quickly buried. And if it is so near the surface, maybe not so long ago? Could maybe the Flood of the Bible explain this?
[ ]Smarter than you
re.remarks from tidiebug and mely mel:
Are you both really as stupid as this?.Yes it really is a Mammoth(I'm pretty sure the scientists know alot more than you, tudiebug on this subject and no,mely mel,no one froze it deliberatley. It died during the ice age which,in simple terms for your small brain, was a very long time ago.
[ ]Dear Smarter Than You
Excuse me? Since when did Tudiebug say she had more knowledge of the subject of this Frozen mammoth than a scientist? Tudiebug was just pointing out the fact that this is a mammoth not an elephant.
'Smarter than you?' oh please. If you really want to prove your intelligence you should at least use proper punctuation and spell a lot correctly.
[ ]"really smarter than you"
wow!
you guys are really being lame!
but i agree with the girl who sticks up for tudiebug
but smarter than you
[ ]really has a point though
what kind of a dumbass would
read an article about
things preserved in ice
and then....
say we are wrong for freezing it?
wow.
ignorance is never funny but
thats about as close as you'll get to it "]
-i really am smarter than you "]
^_^
you guys don't have to fight about this let's just wait for news about this... after all its been studied in japan... ^_^ the scientist know there stuff... ^_^

I like dis website becz m also relatd to bio.sci.nd m intrsd in it.

wtf mates
[ ]CASSANDRA
That is not cool! Froze a fish, but not a BABY ELEPHANT! That's cruel! Although, it's been dead for 10,000 years, BUT STILL!!! There is a rule about this 10,000 years ago! This is what it said: "DO NOT FREEZE MAMMOTH. THESE ARE ONE OF THE WORLDS MOST TREASURED ANIMALS, SO PLEASE SAVE THEM! THANK YOU." See what that says? So ya'll that lived 10,000 years ago should be ashamed of yourselves. [From Nature Girl]
[ ]tudiebug
I never said i was smarter, but how do you know for a fact it is a mammoth? my guess is unless you were there to witness this blessed event then you don't really know do you.
[ ]PEPANTOLI
Anyone has readed something about the ice age?
If the response is no, don't leave commentaries about little elepahants or other nonsenses.
[ ]emrez2x
cant they use the DNA samples on the mammoth to clone 1?
[ ]deliff
Geez.
[ ]Guys you are arguing about something that had passed away 10,000 fucking years ago.
IT CAN'T FEEL ANYTHING.
IT DIDN'T FEEL ANYTHING WHEN IT WAS FROZEN.
THEY CAN'T REPRODUCE.
IT WON'T COME BACK TO LIFE.
Scientists are using their resources to investigate the Mammoth, as THEY ARE EXTINCT!
AND A MAMMOTH ISN'T EXACTLY THE SAME AS AN ELEPHANT.
geez!
Why not argue about less trivial things.
Try war, paedophiles and racism.
They're pretty hot topics I'm sure you will be able to filter the negativity into one of those funnels.
Thanks very much for reading this.
Adios. Keep reading dem books G's.

At first I thought some of these comments were funny, then I just got depressed because you people are F*CKING RETARDED!!!! Why do the dumbest people just HAVE to leave comments? Seriously its better to keep your mouth shut and be perceived stupid than to open it and have it confirmed.
[ ]Jester4all
Feeling a little opinionated are we.
[ ]Kitty
I must admit I'm 18 and know a lot about the ice age and the dinosaurs because i watch documentries and kids movies and some of you people will be a lot older then me but acting like children over something so small
[ ]Jester4all
I would agree with the acting like children in some respect from a number of the comments here, but from the "something so small" side, it may be the age thing, but one of life's fundamental questions among liberal thinkers is what our origins were, how did we get where we are today, and the best way of doing that is to study our past.
[ ]cwltank
peeps, yes this is an mammoth, do you think scientist will waste money & time on such nonsence. I agree that the question that should be asked, is can they clone it? Im sure they are doing things of this nature as we speak.
If a person think before they speak, they will knowthat Siberia is a very cold place, but the climate has changed, although its still cold there, maybe it appeared through the ice so it can be dug up.
Yours truly,

I believe the Bible is correct and that it was frozen from a Hydrogen meteor. Try the idea of Noah's flood. The explosion of pure hydrogen within an atmosphere of oxygen would have caused simultaneous ignition and freezing all at once. This would mean that everything would be frozen and in some sense( just like some mammoths have apparently been found sperated in half by meters ) would explain many things like magnetic declination, continental drifts, oceanic ridges and the fact of the magnetic field have a decrease. P.S. Please don't swear, morals are more important than logical reason.
[ ]boss chick
wow u guyz are funny hehe
[ ]soya
lmao this is so not kool tho but kind of wired did they find it from anartica? or is it just a fackey lol!-.-
[ ]:)
wierd ,cool mamoth!!
[ ]:)
wat kind of person thinks that this mammoth is an elephant, (stupid) its a mommoth !! ^duh^
[ ]Basil
Just a few interesting facts... If this was found frozen in ice in Syberia then it would have to be a Mammoth. Elephants can't survive in cold climates due to their openly exposed skin, Mammoths had hair all over their bodies and as such could survive the harsh temperatures of Syberia.
[ ]After I did some research i found that numerous numbers of Mammoth heards were said to be found in mainly the northern hemisphere, and as such were said to migrate north to escape the ice age which scientists have said would've started in the southern hemisphere.
It is my belief that if this frozen corpse was found in Syberia then it would have to be a Mammoth.
NonOfUrBuisness
Why is it that EVERYONE IN japan find interesting things that go back in time. BUT if they were in that time when mammoths still exsisted they would go and chop of the mammoth's head. I mean what is the world where living in?>!!!!!!!!!!!!!
[ ]sal
I froze my dog, and now Researchers at Japan's Jikei University will soon be checking the mailbox for a cool package from me!
[ ]sal
P.S. Basil
[ ]"Elephants can't survive in cold climates due to their openly exposed skin"
That is why this elephant died! LOL
poopie
really?? LOL he was saying why the fuck would an elephant be there if it couldent even survive to get that far...? idiot ROFL
[ ]Jester4all
Yes would be good to first read the article before commenting. So yeh they were estimated in the tens of thousands of years ago, which would not have to be related to it's burial depth considering changes in weather, well a number of possibilities really. Concerning how well it's preserved it could well have been caught and died in a blizzard or avalanche encasing it for thousands of years. They have mentioned documenting it's internal organs, but what i am interested in is the prospect of an attempt at cloning the little guy. Surely if it's that well preserved there would be sufficient cell tissue/DNA to clone.
[ ]rachel656
oh OMG!it is so amazing to study it!!!!!!!!poor mamoth!
[ ]paul
it look so sad............but we are lucky to see a baby mammoth.
[ ]Camille
Wow, this is amazing! That is probably the most preserved extinct animal ever! They where lucky to find this!!!
[ ]Camille
I watched a show about this last night. There is only seven preserved mammoths like this. It IS a mammoth, because it says it has 'some fur' left...
