A pair of baby albino Japanese Giant Salamanders (Andrias japonicus) discovered this past spring in a mountainous area of Hiroshima prefecture are being kept at Hiroshima's Asa Zoo for the purpose of ecological research. The two specimens were found along with three other albino salamanders at the same location.
The Japanese Giant Salamander, which can grow up to 140 cm (4 ft. 8 in.) long and live for up to 80 years, is an endangered species that has been officially designated one of Japan's living national treasures. Young Japanese Giant Salamanders typically have black skin that develops into a mottled brown and black with age, and the occurrence of albinos is extremely rare. The discovery of a group of albino Japanese Giant Salamanders is unprecedented.
The salamanders were discovered in a mountain stream near the town of Kitahiroshima when farmers were diverting water to their fields. A sandy area became exposed as the water level fell, revealing a group of thirty salamander larvae, five of which were albinos.
Chie Ashikaga, a zookeeper with 35 years of experience in raising Japanese Giant Salamanders, says, "I've never heard of anyone finding five albinos together. This is due either to environmental changes or to genes passed on by one of their albino parents. With many mysteries surrounding the Japanese Giant Salamander, these specimens might give us a better understanding of the ecology."
Asa Zoo will place the albinos on public display beginning October 21.

Fascinating. I've seen oosanshouo at Ueno Zoo and elsewhere but never in the wild, and never albinos. They are amazing creatures. I think a species in China may be the biggest salamander in the world.

The correct spelling is: axalotl. The axalotl is a large salamander from Mexico that comes in a variety of colors. It's a different species but similar in appearance to the japanese giant salamander. The axalotl remains completely aquatic for its entire life (i.e. it keeps its gills and can live completely underwater), while the japanese one loses its external gills after about 18 months. They can live completely underwater as long as they have gills.

Not axalotl, it's axolotl, which means 'water dog' in Nahuatl.
[ ]Axolotl's usually stops growing at around 20 centimeters, it's not a large salamander as you said.
All of them belong to an order of amphibians called Caudata or Urodela.
Those salamanders of the photo are the larvae of Andrias japonicus, the Japanese giant salamander.

Axolotls are neotenous, meaning they stay in what used to be the larval form of their ancestors. However, Japanese giant salamanders are aquatic their entire lives, even though they lose their gills. So are the other salamanders that are closely related, such as the Chinese giant salamander and the hellbender.
Axolotls are commonly available as pets, and are commonly available in albino and leucistic forms, as well as wild type, and a few other color variations. They're easy to keep, eat worms, mealworms, bloodworms, etc. I have an albino and a wild type. They're endangered in the wild, so the individuals you buy will be captive bred (which is a good thing). Be careful the person you buy from is reputable, tiger salamander larvae often get sold as axolotls. Though they're nifty pets as well, they won't remain aquatic. They'll lose their gills and will need to move onto land.
