It would be interesting to know whether the species involved are common in the area, and if not, from how far away are they from?

I discounted the N. Korea source until I got to a chapter in "The Man Who Loved China" about Needham. The N. Koreans accused the Americans of dropping canisters of vermin and infected insects over N. Korea during the war. The Chinese claimed to be infected as well, and even got a group of international scientists, including Needham, to investigate the issue. This all happened after it had been discovered that the U.S. military was producing biological and chemical weapons.

So, in short, truth is sometimes stranger than fiction.
