Photos: World Sand Sculpture Festival 2009

“Fairy tales and legends” is the theme of this year’s World Sand Sculpture Festival now underway at the Tottori Sand Dunes in Tottori prefecture. On display (until May 31) are 19 massive works crafted by world-class sculptors from ten nations. The artists used around 2,700 tons of sand and took about two weeks to complete their works. Can you identify the fairy tales and legends depicted in these sand sculptures?

Yeah, like two weeks, according to the article.

Amazing detail on these!
The one at the very top shows Gulliver getting roped down by the Lilliputians.
[]
are you from whatever country that sculpture was made buy? ‘cuz I don’t know that, and neither does my social studies teachers’ or my brother’s professers’!!!!!!!

Gulliver is the main character from “Gulliver’s Travels” written by Jonathan Swift. Swift is Irish but Gulliver is English. Hope that helps!

“The one at the very top shows Gulliver getting roped down by the Lilliputians.”
I read that as “getting raped by the Liliputians”… puts a whole new twist on the story.

I -believe- they spray a kind of glue mixed with water on it.

I would love to bodyslam those sand sculptures!

The sculpture in the top photo is mine. It’s GULLIVER at the bottom and JACK AND THE BEANSTALK on top. I did spend 14 days on it, but it was not part of the competition. It and the castle next to it are part of the large demo sculpture. The contestants only had 10 days to complete their pieces. It was a most excellent event.

Netherlands == The Flying Dutchman?
Czech == Rabbi Loewe and the Golem

I had guessed Poseidon for the Netherlands but your guess is far better. And kudos on even being able to guess about the Czech entry’s theme – I wouldn’t even know where to begin.

Cool!

Photos: World Sand Sculpture Festival 2009 ::: Pink Tentacle great article thank you.

This is truly remarkable why aren’t these sculptures in some kind of permanent form, that way they can be preserved forever for people to view and awe over, it’s such a waste of art if it’s washed away by rain or water…..I salute those who have the gift to do this God had blessed you with absolute talent which I envy….Keep up the good work!

I can definitely see the different cultures in all of these
