This means that my next statement is wrong under the context, but still a learning experience:

If octopus *was* a Latin word, rather than greek, you still wouldn't use the masculine second declension nominative plural, (i), because it is *bastardized* Latin; meaning that it has already been incorporated into the English language, and thus reverts to the standard English plural ending, (s).
