The Giant Squid was once a mythical creature known as a Krakin, now it is a relevent part of science with new discoveries like the colossus squid. Who's to say these creatures are not real? Who's to say they are not all made up? We might never know but just because you do not have a body does not meen something does not exist or is a hoax. Like I mentioned before, we have only just found the first body of a giant squid so I guess it must have been the first one of its kind and none were around centuries ago when people were making these statements...
