Fishing with nanotech
Major vacuum equipment manufacturer ULVAC has announced plans to enter the fishing tackle industry with a new type of lure featuring a nanocoating applied with special vacuum technology. The high-tech lure, called STROM, will go on sale online in October.
Relying on a vapor deposition polymerization technique used in semiconductor manufacturing, an optical coating is formed over the entire glossy surface of the lure. The ultrathin optical coating has a high degree of light transmission, giving the lure an iridescent “holographic color” that changes according to the viewing angle.
Fishing lures typically use motion and color to attract the attention of fish, and they often feature decals and paint designed to reflect sunlight. These conventional lures are only capable of reflecting light in one direction, though, putting them at a distinct disadvantage when compared to STROM.
In tests, anglers using STROM caught 4 times as many fish as those using other commercially available lures. The company claims the lure appeals to freshwater fish such as trout, as well as to reef-dwelling saltwater fish such as rockfish.
ULVAC’s initial plans are to roll out two types of STROM lures — one weighing 2.4 grams and one weighing 3.7 grams. The lures will be priced at 3,000 yen ($US25) and will only be available online. The company hopes to sell 6,000 units.
“Now, even beginners can enjoy lure fishing,” says the president of Tigold Corporation, the ULVAC subsidiary handling sales.

Thanks for the comment, Judy. According to the statement on the Tigold homepage, the company will soon be announcing how to purchase the lures. It’s unclear whether they’ll be handling international orders (outside Japan), but you might try clicking on the “Contact Us” button and sending an email to the address on that page. If you want, I can check the Tigold page again soon for details and post a link to the purchase page.

Good Morning,
Last fall I ran a free fishing contest for the children in my town, and it was a great success. We had around 50 children enter the contest, ranging in age from 4 to 16. The largest fish was a 5 pound largemouth bass. I was in close contact and support from the MN DNR which gave me a good deal of advice and suggestions on how to run the contest. They also said that I would have a better turn out if I ran the contest in the spring. Many children anxious to fish from being cooped up over the winter. So I am writing this email to ask for your help. I am trying to organize this free fishing contest for children 16 and younger, the second annual, for the Saturday May 26th, which is the MN inland water fishing opener weekend. Last years contest was a nightmare logistically trying to organize in such a short amount of time, so that is why I am starting now. And since I am not charging any fees, I have no budget to work with.
Same as last year I am planning on having it be from age 16 and under, divided into three ages groups. I have plenty of people who are willing to help me with this event, but we are in need of prizes for them.
My main demographic is a low income housing development where there are
approx 2 to 3 dozen children, but all children in Winona are welcome. My goal is to make it possible for all children to be able to fish and win some fishing gear that they normally might not have been able to.
Last year we had very generous donations, which made the children very happy. Everyone was able to take home a good sized bag of fishing gear and prizes. I was wondering if you would be able to donate for us. If you had any products, whether it is last year’s models, product defects or the like.
Anything would be appreciated by myself and the kids I am sure.
I appreciate any assistance you could be.
Sincerely,
Joe Busse

So are these lures on sale now? How may I purchase some? Like the idea and the colors. Do you make any with ultra violet? Thanks.
